Baiwan is a village in the mountains of northern Guangdong province. Until a few years ago it was listed as one of the poorest parts of China although recent developments have provided better roads and mobile telphones giving the people greater access to the outside world. Unfortunately there remains little employment in the area with most people relying on subsistence farming. Many adults head for the cities to make sufficient money to pay for their children's education back in Baiwan.

There are numerous small and medium sized schools around the area, some quite remote. Even so there are still many children in even remoter villages who live too far away, or who are too poor, to attend school.
